Net Metering in India: What to Verify with Your SERC and DISCOM
Questions project owners should verify under the current state and DISCOM framework before sizing solar.

01
There is no single national project answer
Solar interconnection is implemented through state regulations and local utility procedures. Eligibility, capacity limits, metering arrangements, settlement and documentation can differ by consumer category and DISCOM.
A rule quoted for one state or tariff category should not be carried into another project without verification.
02
Verify policy before freezing system size
The commercial value of exported energy and the permissible interconnection arrangement can influence the optimal system size.
- Consumer category and sanctioned load
- Applicable net, gross or other metering arrangement
- Capacity and transformer constraints
- Application documents and technical approvals
- Metering, inspection and commissioning process
- Settlement treatment and billing cycle
03
Design for the current framework, retain flexibility
A feasibility study should use the current notified framework and utility process while testing how the project performs under different export assumptions. This keeps the investment decision grounded without assuming policy will remain unchanged for the full asset life.
